Marriott Unveils Plans for Luxury Sheraton Resort in Hervey Bay

Updated: May 22

  • In short: Marriott International is planning to introduce Sheraton Hotels and Resorts to Hervey Bay, as part of the AU$445 million Torquay waterfront development, featuring a 223-room five-star hotel.

  • Key Takeaways: Sheraton Hervey Bay will make Hervey Bay a significant landmark on a national and global scale, making it an essential stop for international travellers exploring Australia.

The hotel giant has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with developer Sunny Beach Land, confirming its intention to operate the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort.

Sheraton Hervey Bay, anticipated to become the fifth Sheraton location in Australia, is poised to be the largest and most luxurious new hotel between Brisbane and Cairns.

Richard Crawford, Marriott International Vice President of Hotel Development for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, expressed confidence in the Hervey Bay market, stating that Sunny Beach Land's project presents the perfect opportunity for Marriott to enter.

Crawford highlighted the city's growth potential but noted the lack of high-quality accommodations, which diminishes its appeal to affluent travellers. He emphasised Marriott's distribution strategy targeting its 200 million Marriott Bonvoy loyalty members, who represent a significant portion of hotel occupancy.

He highlighted the potential benefits of joining Marriott's network, citing the success of Sheraton properties in Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and Port Douglas. By aligning with this established network, Sheraton Hervey Bay would enjoy immediate recognition and attract a diverse range of travellers.

Dan Cuda, Director of Sunny Beach Land, applauded the partnership with Marriott as a significant win for Hervey Bay, positioning the region as a premier tourism destination. He emphasized the economic and social benefits of the project, highlighting its potential to drive tourism and boost local businesses and employment.

The hotel's plans include the following:

  • Resort pool

  • Fitness centre

  • Business lounge

  • Conference and functions space

  • Kids club

  • Signature restaurant

  • Rooftop bar with bay views.

Renowned designer Jamie Durie has been enlisted to design a world-class Oasis recreational area for the resort. Durie emphasised the allure of Hervey Bay as a destination, particularly with the prestigious Sheraton brand anchoring the Esplanade. He predicted that Hervey Bay would become a landmark destination, attracting tourists from across Australia and around the globe.
